And by Disney, I will focus specifically on 20th Century Fox, the studio that has officially sold their soul to make the Disney empire stronger. Besides that, this studio is well known for Star Wars, Independence Day, X-Men, Ice Age, Avatar. Most recently, Fox has been known for Deadpool, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Alita: Battle Angel. The Current Era of 20th Century Fox In my previous analysis on 20th Century Fox (), I had different eras that Fox went through. For the past few years, 20th Century Fox was in the Modern X-Men Era, when 20th Century Fox was attempting to release at least one X-Men film every year from 2013 to 2018, with the exception of 2015. In this era, 20th Century Fox was well known for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Deadpool, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Martian, Logan, The Revenant, The Greatest Showman, and Bohemian Rhapsody. As of 2019, this era has ended, and 20th Century Fox is currently in a new era called the Disney Era. On March 20, 2019, The Walt Disney Company has officially acquired 20th Century Fox, along with most of the Fox assets from Rupert Murdoch with the exception of the sports and news networks. This was due to Rupert Murdoch fearing of big tech companies like Google or Apple possibly taking over Hollywood and wanted to make sure Fox survives. In 2017, they auctioned the Fox assets. Sony and Verizon were interested, but only wanted to buy parts of Fox and not all of it. The auction was then between Disney and Comcast. Disney ultimately won and was the favorite of the two for Rupert Murdoch. This will benefit Disney as their streaming service, Disney+ could have some 20th Century Fox content on there. As for the Rated R Fox films, those will be on the Disney-owned Hulu. Alita: Battle Angel was the last film before the Disney purchase, which is considered to be the swan song for 20th Century Fox by some (coincidentally, Dua Lipa released a song for Alita: Battle Angel called Swan Song). Though, there will be some that will argue that Deadpool 2 or Bohemian Rhapsody is Fox’s swan song. Some may also say Logan was Fox’s swan song before being reminded that they are talking about Fox and not just the X-Men franchise. Before we get into how they are doing this year, let’s see how they were doing the previous year. 2018: The year started off with Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which ended the Maze Runner series. Despite declining in worldwide gross and especially domestic gross, the series ended on a high note as it made a profit for Fox (made $288M on a budget of $62M). Red Sparrow did alright for the studio, but the budget of $69M may have prevented Fox from profiting more off of the film. Fox made a decent profit off of Love, Simon, making $66M on a budget of $10M. However, 20th Century Fox’s summer was awfully quiet besides Deadpool 2. Deadpool 2 was obviously a major hit for them, though not as profitable as the first film due to a higher budget. The film made $785M on a budget of $110M. After Deadpool 2, Fox didn’t offer anything for the summer with the exception of the Darkest Minds, the film that some people got confused as an X-Men spinoff (I did at first). But no, it wasn’t an X-Men spinoff (it would’ve done better as an X-Men spinoff though), but a young adult adaptation of a dystopian future. These novels have been adapted so much in the early 2010s, no one cared about the Darkest Minds and it showed financially. The film only made $41M on a budget of $34M, so it’s unlikely that its sequels will be adapted to film. The Predator did okay with $161M on a budget of $88M, but it most likely isn’t enough for Fox to consider a sequel. Bad Times at the El Royale bombed, making $32M on a budget of $32M. The Hate U Give didn’t really help Fox get back the money lost from Bad Times, making $35M on a budget of $23M. Widows did okay, making $76M on a budget of $42M, but it didn’t hit break-even point. Alita: Battle Angel was supposed to come out that Christmas of 2018, but was pushed back to 2019 due to Fox fearing that it would be cannibalized by Aquaman and Bumblebee. However, that left Fox with nothing that Christmas, so they decided to make a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 called Once Upon a Deadpool. Fortunately, one of their last releases of the year was Bohemian Rhapsody, which made $904M on a budget of $50M and surprisingly surpassed Fox’s Deadpool 2. Overall, 20th Century Fox had a good year. Deadpool 2 and surprisingly Bohemian Rhapsody were the major films that pushed Fox to $1B domestic, and the Greatest Showman from Christmas 2017 had a major presence for the first month of 2018. 2018 is the last year where 20th Century Fox had complete control over their films before selling their assets to Disney in March of 2019. Hopefully, 2018 isn’t also the last year where Fox will make $1B in the US because 2019 is looking like hot garbage compared to 2018. Biggest Wins: Deadpool 2 and Bohemian Rhapsody Biggest Loses: The Darkest Minds, The Hate U Give, Bad Times at the El Royale 2019 Films That Haven’t Been Released Yet: The only films in 2019 that have yet to come out as of this post are Ford v. Ferrari and Spies in Disguise. I thought Ford v. Ferrari would underperform last year, but I think it can make $110M DOM, but I’ll stand by the idea that Ford v. Ferrari will make about $250M WW. As for Spies in Disguise, I’d say it could make $100M DOM, but I’ll stand by the fact that it can make $300M WW. So how did the year go so far? 2019: Dragon Ball Super: Broly did way better than I expected. I expected less than $10M to come out of this film in the US, yet it almost made that much with a respectful #4 debut. It would go on to make 3 times my predictions as it ends with $30M in the US and $123M worldwide. Fox’s other January release, The Kid Who Would Be King, didn’t meet the same fate unfortunately. I thought the film would make about $90M in the US and $350M worldwide. I was wrong. The film bombed, making only $32M on a budget of $59M. Alita: Battle Angel would later swoop in on Valentine’s Day and be the last film for 20th Century Fox as a standalone distributor before the acquisition by Disney was complete. I thought it would make $150M in the US and $500M worldwide. While Alita didn’t even hit $100M in the US (made $86M), Alita would make $405M worldwide, almost $100M less than my prediction. Alita overall did okay, but not amazing with a large budget of $170M preventing the film to be profitable as a swan song for 20th Century Fox. Breakthrough was the first Fox film under Disney and the only this year that people can definitively say has made a profit, making $50M on a budget of $14M. But everything else that Fox released under Disney has been a disaster. Dark Phoenix bombed right out of the gate, only making $252M on a budget of $200M. This would make Dark Phoenix one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. Stuber and the Art of Racing in the Rain haven’t helped matters either in terms of a good summer for Fox. Stuber hit the break-even point, but not much more, making $32M on a budget of $16M. The Art of Racing in the Rain made $34M on a budget of $50M. This summer was disastrous for 20th Century Fox and Disney who just purchased the iconic studio. The fall hasn’t been helpful either. Ad Astra disappointed at the box office, making $127M on a budget of $100M. Most recently, Terminator: Dark Fate is set to bomb for Fox. Fortunately, the film was co-financed between 20th Century Fox, Skydance, Tencent Pictures, and Paramount Pictures, so it shouldn’t hurt Fox as much as Dark Phoenix did. As of now, 20th Century Fox has one of the worst years since 1995 domestically. While they made over $1B in the US in 2018, they will struggle to reach even $500M in the US this year. I hope 2020 is better. Biggest Wins? : Alita: Battle Angel and Breakthrough (Maybe Ford v. Ferrari and Spies in Disguise) Biggest Loses: The Kid Who Would Be King, The Art of Racing in the Rain, and especially Dark Phoenix 2020: The next year is coming, and it’s time to look at what Fox has in-store for everyone next year. I’ll try to keep it short (with a basic description of each one if necessary and how well it might do). The numbers I have won’t be accurate, so take it with a grain of salt. Underwater - it’s a science fiction thriller film directed by William Eubank. As a horror film in January, I’d say that this could make some decent profit. The biggest concern is how many other horror films trying to capitalize on the January spot like Gretel & Hansel (United Artists Releasing), The Grudge (Sony Pictures), and The Turning (Universal Pictures). At most, I see this making $80M DOM and $170M WW. Call of the Wild - it’s a live action CGI-animated adventure film directed by Chris Sanders. This is the second 20th Century Fox film of the year that was delayed from 2019 to 2020. No trailer has been released despite it releasing sometime in February. Unless a trailer comes out by the end of the year, I’d expect this to be delayed to later in the year. I’ll stand by my claim last year that it will make $200M worldwide. The New Mutants - it’s a superhero horror film directed by Josh Boone and will be the last X-Men film to be distributed by 20th Century Fox before Marvel Studios reboots the X-Men franchise. This is the third 20th Century Fox film of the year that was delayed from 2019 to 2020. Seeing as how Disney didn’t care about Dark Phoenix, I’m pretty sure they care even less about this film. The reason why they pushed it to 2020 is probably to not damage the X-Men brand too much as they don’t want two disasters from the same franchise came out the same year, so they spaced it out. It should do okay, but I wouldn’t be shocked if the quality of the film isn’t that great. I’d say $120M DOM and $260M WW. It’s a little more than Dark Phoenix, but with a lower budget, this could profit. The Woman in the Window - Oh look, another Fox film that was supposed to come out last year. It’s a mystery thriller drama film directed by Joe Wright and is the last Fox 2000 Pictures film. There’s not much information for this. If I had to make a guess, I don’t see this making more than $100M worldwide. Fear Street - it’s a horror film directed by Leigh Janiak and is based on the Fear Street series by R. L. Stine. I compared this to R. Stine’s other work that became a film, Goosebumps. However, this is a full on horror compared to the Goosebumps film that came out in 2015. I’d say $70M DOM and $140M WW. Free Guy - it’s a science fiction action comedy film directed by Shawn Levy. 20th Century Fox must be really confident in this film as they released a poster for this film and not for any of the films coming out earlier this year like Call of the Wild or The Woman in the Window. The concept sounds interesting, with Ryan Reynolds character finding out he’s in an online video game that’s about to go offline. I’d say this could make $180M DOM and $380M WW. Bob’s Burgers: The Movie - it’s an animated musical comedy film directed by Loren Bouchard and is based on the Bob’s Burgers tv show. Bob’s Burgers has a somewhat large fanbase, so I could see this making as high as $150M DOM and $300M WW. The Empty Man - it’s a supernatural horror film directed by David Prior. Not much is known besides the synopsis of an ex-police officer that tries to find a missing girl and instead finds a cult trying summon an evil entity. I could see this being a modest success, making $50M DOM and $80M WW. The King’s Man - it’s a period action spy film directed by Matthew Vaughn and is a prequel to the first two Kingsman movies. This is the first 20th Century Fox film of the year that was delayed from 2019 to 2020. The film should do as well as the other Kingsman films with a different setting and may help gain some new fans if it’s good. I’d say this could make $120M and DOM $420M WW Death on the Nile - it’s a crime thriller film directed by Kenneth Branagh and is the sequel to 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express. Seeing as how that was a success, I could see this make similar numbers with a slight increase. I think this could make $120M DOM and $370M WW. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie - I don’t get it. Supposedly, everybody’s talking about Jamie, yet I haven’t heard anyone talk about Jamie on the subreddit. Jokes aside, this is a musical drama film directed by Jonathan Buterell and is based on the musical. This also won’t be 20th Century Fox’s only musical this year. I think this can be a success as fans of the musical will watch this. At most, I could see this making $100M DOM and $220M WW. However, once the West Side Story remake comes out, people will shift their attention to that film. West Side Story - it’s a romantic musical film directed by Steven Spielberg and is a remake of the 1961 classic, though it is said to follow a little more closely to the play. This remake has gotten a lot of attention, especially since Steven Spielberg will make the film. I could see this making $120M DOM and $250M WW, though depending on word of mouth, it could go as high as $300M worldwide. Thoughts on 2020 Slate: I’m glad 20th Century Fox at least has 13 films to work with. Then again, 4 of these films (The Woman in the Window, The King’s Man, Call of the Wild, and The New Mutants) were supposed to come out last year. This is better than the 2019 slate we ended up getting, but it could be a lot better. The biggest films here are The King’s Man, Free Guy, Death on the Nile, and West Side Story. Their biggest film however will probably make $450M at most (betting on The King’s Man to be the highest grossing Fox film) and that’s unlikely. Fox has seriously declined in the past few years, and they coincidentally got worse when Disney bought them (not saying they are the reason for Fox failing), Hell, the year after 2020, there’s a chance there could be less Fox films. 10 is a good amount, no need to make less. The Future - 20th Century Fox only scheduled two movies for 2021: Nimona, Artemis, and Avatar 2. Despite Nimona and Artemis being unknown, Avatar 2 should be able to clear the billion dollar milestone just fine, but I doubt it will reach $2B, let alone Avatar’s numbers due to how long it took for Avatar 2 to come out. In terms of films in development, some sequels include the Simpsons Movie 2, Kingsman 3, and Alita: Battle Angel 2. Some new films include Irredeemable, Clue, The Last Due, Boogeyman, Family Guy, and the Garden of Abdul Gasazi. There will be reboots of Cheaper by the Dozen, Home Alone, Night At the Museum, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid coming to Disney+. How successful can 20th Century Fox be under Disney? Every since the disaster that was summer 2019 for Fox, Disney has been trying to restructure the company to fit Disney’s image. I think 20th Century Fox can still be successful under Disney, but I think Disney will make sure that Fox’s lineup doesn’t overshadow Disney’s lineup each year (which is obvious, but could happen in the future). Fortunately, I think Fox can be fine under Disney and should remain the same, just with Disney in control (for now). Though we won’t know for sure until 2021 to see what Disney’s Fox will release as all the 2019 and 2020 films were greenlit by the previous owner. Disney is also contractually obligated to release all of these films theatrically, so Disney can’t pull any of the 2019 or 2020 Fox films set to release and put them on Disney+ or Hulu. As I said since the merger, I’m against the Disney-Fox merger, but it’s official at this point. I really hope Disney can treat 20th Century Fox well and have them around at least for the next two decades. 20th Century Fox is a very iconic studio, and shouldn’t have to suffer the same fate Disney’s Touchstone Pictures did a few years ago (which Disney can hypothetically do, but won’t anytime soon). Many Fox properties are going to be on Disney+ (which is set to launch on November 12th, 2019), while the mature Fox films are on Hulu, so they are getting some respect from Disney. I live in a small town in, (as close to the true meaning of ‘literally’ can imply) the middle of nowhere; where it rains all the time and it's often times more night than it is day. I won't tell you what state, what city, or even any details that might lead you to me like the breadcrumbs in Hansel and Gretel. After all, it would only cause the world I have carefully crafted to crumble around me. If you knew where I was, you might say something to someone; who might in turn say something to someone else. Eventually that someone else might know someone I know—or lives in my exact vicinity who knows someone I know—and my world would come crashing down as though it was built upon the principals of jenga. Counting that hasn't already begun... I live up on the third floor of a four floor apartment building that probably should have been demolished a long time ago. If floor boards are not creaking above me with each step or movement from a neighbor one story up, or the wall behind my computer monitor isn’t tapping ‘yes’ over and over; the building itself pulsates, as though it was breathing. Slow, and steady; sentient. Though partially due to a vivid imagination and more due to the wetland this place was built upon, it is certainly already more than enough to keep you up at night. Worst yet, the smell of mold is always present; probably tucked deep within the walls where you can’t see it. As I have never bore witness to the wretched fungus, that did not stop me from immediately recognizing the odor. It’s wet here, all the time; and the ground is a sink hole in the waiting. Perfect conditions for mold. Everyone knows everyone in this small little town. Which is probably why the health inspectors have yet to condemn this damn apartment building. Though if they did, I wouldn’t have anywhere to go; so I guess it’s for the best. After all, this is all a shut in like me can afford. I’ve lived here for about three years; December 13th 2015, when I was twenty-two and finally kicked out of the basement for being a useless nobody. Were it not for the inheritance my grandfather left for his 'favorite little grandson', I would have to actually leave this place to get a job; whilst dealing with—well, surviving—the intense light radiating from a ball of gas… the insufferable socializing with ‘people’… just, everything that keeps me shut in. Social anxiety at its worst. I'd like to call myself an introvert, but that doesn't feel like it really defines me. If I was in Japan, a hikikomori might sound more appropriate, but I’m not as much of a weeb to refer to myself as one. I have never found comfort outside of my room; lights out, pitch black, with the only illumination being that of a computer monitor. Serene silent spinning of the fan. Online, the internet, forums, reddit… and especially the ‘dark web’. These are the places I lurk. Where I truly feel alive. The only people I want to know are there. Hidden away, just like me; far, far away on the other side of a computer screen. Where we only know each other by our usernames. I’ve been like this for as long as I can remember. I never really fit in. Not part of the social norm; nor would I ever want to be. Surrounded by the liars, the fakes, the cheats; the very animals that call themselves ‘human’. I have always been able to see people for what they truly are—that in which is hidden behind the mask they place to fool the world around them. Like a freakin’ mascaraed ball gone wrong. I always referred to this ability of mine as a special gift; to immediately be able to unmask the monsters around me. And in a small town like this, where everyone knows your name… where you live… what you do… the only way to escape is to lock yourself up. I dropped out of school back in tenth grade. I have been shut-in ever sense. ‘Shut-in’, I’ll use that. At first, people who knew me would ask how I was doing. My parents would make up some elaborate lie, like anyone would naturally do within their position. "Oh, Johnny? He's doing special schooling in the next town over! " They'd say while putting on a mask to hide the fact that they were terrible parents—feeling like they couldn’t even raise their only son to grow up normal. They wore a mask like every other lying creep in this town so people would praise them for their fine parenting. Eventually, the town forgot about me. Or maybe my parent’s just said I died saving someone or something stupid like that; whatever further thickened their mask of superiority. Even after moving into this apartment building, I made sure to not leave. Luckily for me, the one damn thing this small town actually has… Amazon. I order everything from there. Never having to leave the comfort of my room. I saw my apartment manager only once; and never again. At first he’d keep stopping by, making sure I was adjusting properly. Probably wanting to make sure the mold hadn’t killed me. Kind of hard for the health inspector to look past that one. But I think as the money continued to come in, he just stopped caring… or maybe forgot. Better if he forgot. I've made sure this whole damn town has forgotten my existence. Even my parents stopped calling. My only worries now are: how much longer can I make this money in my account last? And do I get free two-day shipping? I’ve made sure, since I left, to keep things at a bare minimum. Cup-o-noodles, chicken flavor, three times a day. Not exactly healthy. But neither is living in complete darkness either I suppose. Hell, neither is the mold I am sure I am inhaling daily. But the way I look at it; at least I’ll probably die before I run out of cash then, right? Just the mere thought of never having to see another soul again is, in itself, enough subsistence. I know, by now, you’re like, ‘what does this have to do with your neighbor?! ’. I just want you to know I am more than self-aware of my circumstances. You’re going to think I’m completely insane or just paranoid. I am alert. I am sane. I know what fantasy is and what reality is. I know when the creaking of a ‘should be condemned’ building is playing tricks on me. I know there is no boogieman out there. I’ve been able to clearly ascertain the difference between the illusions of the mind and eye and the reality of what is actually happening around me. I needed to paint a clear picture of what I understood, what I knew, and the conditions in which I live. And how I can easily distinguish between them. Because this is where things begin to fall apart. I more recently discovered this board a few weeks before Halloween; October 10th. I enjoyed curling up in October and surfing the web for delicious little stories like Ben Drowned or Lavender Town, you know, the stuff that really causes your skin to crawl. The stuff that makes you jump at shadows at night. I never really knew an entire reddit existed full of that in which I loved. I never earnestly sought out a good creepypasta. Sites I visited would just link to them once in a while. Immediately, I absorbed myself in a number of threads; which I have admitted to myself prior… was not exactly the best idea in my current predicament. In the dark, your eyes can play tricks on you. The imagination is quite a truly fascinating sort of thing. Whether or not I can truly believe the stories I have read, well, call me a cynic; but I definitely felt I could safely write a good number off as attention seekers. Felt. Past tense. Though it’s the ones that feel truly the most real… they keep me up at night. Not that I was exactly sleeping all that well prior; someone like me where his only light source is a computer screen doesn’t exactly sleep all that much already. Suffice to say, the mold in my walls has become especially sentient to me as of late. But again, I am well aware that, that is just the mind playing tricks on me. I don’t really believe it has anything to do with anything I am about to tell you. Though like I have said before. I am really good at removing those masks people so smugly wear and parade around. I don’t ‘imagine’ what I see beneath. It’s like another sense or an animalistic instinct. Like when a dog who is usually friendly to everyone, suddenly is rubbed the wrong way from what you think is an ordinary kind old man. But in reality, that old man keeps children locked up in his basement. The dog saw past his facade, saw what you couldn’t, based completely on instinct. And as wild as my imagination might be right now, I definitely know something strange is happening with the man across the hall. My Neighbor in Room 303. The apartment is four stories tall. There are eight rooms on each floor. Sets of two, directly across from one another, four on each side. Labeled 301 through 304 across the hall from me, and 305 to 308 on my side; with me in room 307. Not exactly that tall. Not exactly that big. Even the rooms themselves are like small studio apartments. Your kitchen and living room and bedroom are all one; your only doors are the bathroom and that in which leads to the hallway. I never met my neighbor, not outside the occasional glance from the peep hole in the door or the rare moments I felt the need to see if the world has ended yet; leading me to look through the blinds. But I still feel that my skills are master class and I could immediately determine if the flesh was beginning to rot underneath someone’s mask. Something like… hmmm... imagine, for example, you are balding. But you don’t want the world to ever find out. So you wear a hat. You never take off that hat. Ever. You bathe with that hat. You sleep in that hat. Soon enough, the skin underneath that hat is going to start growing sores. Rashes. Puss filled sacks protruding from your skull; ready to erupt like volcanos of puss and blood. It gets freakin’ disgusting. And you just keep on wearing that hat until your skin begins to rot. People are like that with their masks. There are things they truly don’t want anyone to know about themselves. Some, are on a far higher level; too afraid to ever let down their guard, so they sleep and they bathe and they wear that mask every second of every day, never allowing their face to feel the air. Murderers. Rapists. Pedophiles. Not to throw it in there to say it’s the same, but the sort of decay that stems from trying to hide your face behind a mask until it rots is the same; even those who are just too afraid to say ‘fuck you world, this is who I am! ’ Like those too afraid to openly admit they are gay in a small town full of right-wing conservatives and extremist bible thumpers. These are the ones whom I usually can spot right away. Sometimes I think I can smell it. The rot seeping out of their masks as they smile and wave to those who only know them as the ‘nice guy down the street’, the ‘guy who gives candy to the kids’, or ‘the most popular boy in school who has multiple women hanging off his arm’ in an obvious front at what he is trying to hide. The smell that fills the rotten air around them is far worse than the mold so precariously growing in the walls. I digress. This guy, my Neighbor in Room 303, I have never really seen anything like that—anything resembling a monster or rot. He’s a bit overweight. Alone. Doesn’t seem to bathe often; he looked like he might have a bad case of B. O. Never really got close enough to tell though. Seemed normal enough. Just someone who never met the right women or man. Whichever way he swung. Never got that promotion or any real lucky break. Probably lost touch with his friends from high school. Family moved far away. That sort of person. So here he is, in the middle of nowhere, in the rainiest and darkest state; if he wasn't depressed before, that would do it. Even if those conditions filled me with energy, I don’t necessarily think that applies to a majority. His mask wasn’t very thick. Not enough people in his life he had to lie too. Didn’t have to exactly keep up appearances you know? So I would have immediately been able to recognize what kind of monster he was underneath were such a creature to reside there. But recently… that mask has changed—err, or, maybe I should say, what is UNDER that mask has changed. I first noticed it the other week. I'd like to say it around a week before just this last Halloween, October 18th or so. My usual order of cup-o-noodles, chicken flavor, arrived. Or, at least, I thought it did. I heard what I perceived as a knock. Nothing sounds right in this apartment. Odd echoes, and sometimes lack thereof. So I do my usual bid; make for the door, stare through the peep hole, and wait for the delivery man to give up and go away. Except, it wasn’t the delivery man. It was my Neighbor. At first, I was completely taken by shock. The first thing I saw was his freakin' eye. Up close, to my peep hole, like he was trying to peep on me! Naturally I jumped back, quickly throwing my hands in front of my mouth as I concealed what would probably be the most unmanly squeal I could muster. I didn’t want him to know I was there or that I had looked through the hole. What if he started talking to me? Ugh, that would have been awkward. After a few seconds, I looked through again to see if he was gone. Nope, he was right there. This time, a step back. Just starring. Kind of wobbly and hunched over. His eyes looked droopy and blood shot. His head then fell forward and into my door. At that moment, I realized what the earlier noise was. He had been falling headfirst into my door. I’d seen this before. He was definitely high. I mean, I have dabbled. But the tricks it played on my mind were not exactly something I had needed. Plus, the shit was expensive. I needed to make my money last. But those eyes and that posture was pretty recognizable; he was baked. Hard. Didn’t take him for someone to get stoned like that. Never exactly saw a druggy under his facade. But then again, what was under his mask definitely had changed. If not albeit slightly. It was definitely different than what I had seen before. Almost… dead. The kind of rot an animal shows after getting hit by a car and baking under the sun. Little bit later, he wobbled off and into his apartment, dragging his feet. All returned to as it should be. I returned to my computer, continued to browse the deepest darkest depths of the internet and eventually blacked out. This was normal. I was sleep deprived. Nothing out of the usual for me. I woke up to a knock. Or a tap. Again, at least what sounded like a knock? Or tap. I often get the two confused; I swear every once in a while I hear a tapping or a knocking coming from behind the wall. I think I have a neighbor over there, but I never met him or her so I can't be sure. Anyway. Quickly looking through the peep hole I saw nothing. Delivery guy must have dropped and ran. Well, to be honest, I was still pretty tired so I wasn’t exactly speeding to get to the door. Especially not after that last fright. Opening my door, I found my faithful cup-o-noodles, chicken flavor. I reached down to pick them up, but I noticed something odd. Not the first thing I should have noticed, but I was still half asleep. Sue me. As my eyes focused in the light of the hallway, I noticed some weird blotches; there were a few drops of red smeared on my package. Dark red. I was pretty confident I knew what it was; I had spent far too much time browsing the dark web to not have seen a thing or two. Especially in the case of true crime scenes. It was blood. But it had been there for a bit; long enough to dry and grow dark. Usually we don’t leave blood around long enough to go from bright red to dark red. My eyes quickly hit the ground and followed a trail of small drops that were similar in color to the few on my package. They led over to my neighbor’s door. I figured he probably hurt himself while high and stumbled back over to my place. Probably was getting confused or lost and thinking my room was his. I was angrier that he got his blood on my only source of food. Luckily, they come in a pack of twelve wrapped in plastic. As soon as that thought crossed my mind, I noticed something I should have noticed long before the blood... where was the box? Unless Amazon in my town was getting cheap and just not bothering with boxing some goods now, it was definitely unusual. Hastily looking around, I saw nothing else out of the ordinary and swiftly scurried back into my apartment. I almost immediately forgot about the oddities and went back to my computer. It wasn’t until the time of my next delivery that I realized something much more dire. We are a small town, like I have said; everyone knows everyone. And I’ll be damned if I don’t at least know the face of the man who delivers my packages. I'd seen him every time I took a peek through my peep hole and I’d never known him to take a day off. He was rather old; probably could have long since retired. But people like that, they probably don’t have any real family left. Didn’t grow up in times of internet or games, no hobbies, or at least one's they can enjoy at their age. Not exactly much to go home to, basically. The second they retire, they pass away. So to keep the blood pumping and life interesting, they continue on with their jobs. Only people in their lives are their customers. He came across as that sort of person. Naturally, what was behind his mask wasn’t anything special. He looked happy, but underneath, was truly sad and alone. Someone who went to the bar after work to drink until they forgot whatever it was they didn’t want to think about. I mean, he could have just died of old age. Or he could have finally just retired. Were it not for the blood on my package leading to my neighbor’s room, I really would have just left the assumption there. The guy delivering my mail was probably no older than twenty-one years old. Though he seemed kind of nervous as he delivered my package. Jittery and super alert. Almost as if he was being watched from all directions, but he couldn’t pinpoint where. He knocked once, dropped my package—luckily for me it was just more cup-o-noodles, chicken flavor—and quickly left. I chocked it up to him just being a lazy millennial sort of cliché, even if he didn't fit the age group. But the worry on his face definitely felt real. I did my usual; I waited until he was out of site and quickly opened my door, bent over, and as I placed my hands on my box, I saw a looming shadow come over me. I froze in paralyzing fear. I had spent so much time vanishing into my bedroom. The world outside no longer recognized my existence and I couldn’t have that ruined now! This town was small, there is no way that some random neighbor wouldn’t mention me to someone else who would in turn mention me to another. Before I knew it, my years of work would have gone up into smoke. Slowly raising my head, still hunched over, I met eyes with him. My Neighbor. He was more slouched this time, more to one side like his arm had gone limp. His mouth was drooping and drool slipping from one side. His eyes looked more lifeless than last time, and even more blood shot. His teeth had this nasty darkish color on them. He just stared at me, not moving; just breathing with a rasp. A putrid smell began to hit my nose; it was coming from his apartment. I smiled nervously and as any introvert shut-in who has completely lost contact with the outside world would mutter when met with an unexpected social exchange; I said, and I quote, ‘Good sir day it is. ’ And I immediately scooted, still hunched, into my room and slammed the door. Thinking about it now, there is one thing I really should have noticed, were it not for the social exchange that had overtaken my every thought. He wasn’t wearing a mask. And it wasn’t that I could just easily look past the mask. Normally, the mask over people’s faces was transparent to me. Sometimes cracked. I could make out what was on the other side. At this moment, he was without a doubt, being a hundred percent his real self. As ‘dead’ as that might be. Exhausted from my encounter; my first truly human interaction in a good few years since leaving my home… I crashed on the bed. Only waking again to the familiar tapping from the wall behind my computer monitor. Once in a while, I would get annoyed—this was one of those times—and would use my vast knowledge of Morse code to tap back. I’ll leave the obscenities I coded to the mysterious sound to your imagination. No matter what message I tapped, it would only respond with the Morse code for 'yes'. Rather unnerving to say the least... but I chocked it up to mere coincidence. Maybe that is just the sound of a rat or the building. It was always the same. Same pattern and breaks. Even if I didn’t tap back. So that would make sense. People in my town don't really go out at night. Small town means places usually close when the sun goes down. A few bars remain open; but I imagine only the police or those passing through town might attend them. Which is what added more to the next mystery. My neighbor wasn't exactly the kind to break habit. At least, that is what I perceived from what laid under his mask prior. He was the kind of person who never broke a rule in their life. Probably bullied for it. But never raised a fist in retaliation either. But not long after the events I just transcribed, I would hear a door open and close at around 11PM each night. I would like to say it started on October 22nd. After a couple of nights, I figured I'd see what it was. This was October 24th. What I saw, obviously, shouldn't surprise you. It was the same neighbor leaving his room. I guess he made a new routine? At least, I would have just left it at that assumption were he not looking even worst. Especially tired. Sores on his arms. Very hunched over. He would drag his feet as he walked. I watched again the next day. Very curious at this point with what was going on. October 25th: he opened the door and just stood there. He had turned like he was going to continue walking down the hall, but just stopped. Wobbled for a bit. Then quickly his head jerked, and he stared straight at me. At least, it felt like he was aware of my presence. I could vividly see the rotting flesh just peeling off his face. He did not wear a mask prior that would cause such a monstrous appearance; and given he wasn’t wearing one now, I was really unnerved. I jumped back, shaking. Slowly, I inched myself closer; against my better judgment, and peeked through again. He was gone. I was startled awake that same night by a loud door shutting. Making my way to the peep hole, I saw nothing. But I heard strange noises coming from his apartment. Crunching. But like, wet? Something tearing? Or grinding? I decided to watch him again the next night. October 26th: He came out of his apartment, but this time, he was wearing a white shirt. It had a large stain in the front, dark red. Blood? Maybe from after he got home? He stood in place once again, as though he was going to walk down the hall way. I stood and watched for what had to have been at least several minutes; when his head began to turn towards me. Not quick or jerking like last time. But slow. He stared at my door; as though his gaze piercing through it and to me. He smiled. Teeth covered in some dark stains. Then just continued down the hallway. I remained awake this time, just watching through that peep hole. Come 3AM, he finally comes home, still dragging his feet. But more inebriated. Almost starving? As he made his way into my view, he stopped in the middle of the hallway. He looked confused. Suddenly, he turned towards my door and tried to open it. I back away from it, petrified! The door knob just continues to wiggle as he begins to throw his weight into the door. Frustrating moaning ensues as I began to hear him start scratching the door. This goes on for a while before I hear an unfamiliar voice. I can't make out what is being said, but my door knob stops wiggling and everything goes silent. I then hear a door open and close. I rush to my peep hole and see nothing. Since then, the tapping has ceased and the smell of death has filled the hallway. It has begun to seep in through under my door. I know the source… my Neighbor’s room. I have read a lot of stories. Seen a lot of horror movies. I know what this seems like, but it can't be right? Have you guys witnessed anything like this before? Do you know what it is? Zombies can’t create routines like this right? Mold isn’t really sentient. I can’t imagine a parasite. Now it's November 7th, and just like always, at 11PM, my Neighbor has left his apartment building. Still no sign of my usual mailman. In fact, I have had a new one every few days. I don't know what is going on, but I'm getting scared. There isn’t a lot of it, but I do see small trails of blood from my door to his once in a while. I know I'm not insane. I know when my mind plays tricks on me. I know what is real and what isn't. But today is different guys. Today, my neighbor didn't shut his door. I'm going to go in and see what I can find. Something is wrong. Something isn't right. I'll update you guys soon on what I find.
